OUR LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM Written by Jejasmin Enteria BS Biology 4A
Everybody is caught up in their own work, working to have a ‘life’, a better future and a stable living. But on top of it, what really is it that we must work for? What really is it that we must value? What really is it that gives us life? Not many realize the value of our natural environment, although everybody knows its use. It has been naturally present since we were born, providing us our needs. And we have the comfort of utilizing it to our benefit. We use it for food, clothing, medicine, shelter and material production. We built technology basically from it. And largely, we built everything from the environment. In our daily activity, everything that we consume are products of our natural resources. We harness, we develop and we use it in our living. Essentially, it is everything in our lives. Sadly we have been abusive. In this time, after 3 million years of humanity, much has been harmed. We are aware of climate change, environmental degradation, pollution and resource depletion, - the results of our abuse. These are not just terms to be memorized in schools, these are actual problems that need to be addressed and acted. But most of us disregard their existence, because we are too consumed by our personal priorities. Consequently, we fail to realize the depth of crisis we are facing, thus we fail to give priority on what is in great need, our alarming environment. The environment is our one and only life support, the fundamental nature that gives us life. It is where we take our breath and our needs. With its devastation, our lives are also at stake. But in all problems there are always solutions and it is not too late to take the initiative to help solve these problems. What is important is that we move, we act and we make a difference. For starters we can do little things that have great impacts. For instance, managing waste through segregation and proper waste disposal, planting trees and other plants, recycling, reusing and reducing materials and helping in any way possible. Our mother Earth is in need most of her children’s care today. | GREENER COMMUNITY Written by Jejasmin Enteria BS Biology 4A Last summer, we had our biosummerian in Laguna. One thing that amazed us all was their accomplishment of not using plastic bags in all their establishments. Everything that you’ll buy in Laguna will be packaged in recycled cartons, or paper bags of their firms. It is chiefly a plastic-free place. Recently, I came to know that most of Alabang, and other capital regions have also participated in this plastic free campaign. This innovation was by far and is indeed a great idea. This will surely reduce the production of non-biodegradable materials in a large scale. Also, an even greater approach to minimize the plastic utilization was the use of eco-friendly bags offered on almost all malls here in our country. Not only it helps in minimizing the use of plastic materials, it also gives awareness to the public on the related issues concerning our environment. But helping our environment is not only delimited in these actions. It is just a matter of concern and effort to come up with our own way of participating in greening our situation. Little by little, the whole archipelago would become an environmentally-friendly country. And this hope lies in each one of us.

TREE LIVING

Everyone knows the pollution that we have caused in this world. We are aware of what we have done, and now we must know what we should do. An immense way to protect environment is to save trees and to plant trees. Trees are our natural life sustainers that give us oxygen, clean our air, bear products and hold the earth.
Today, trees are being abruptly industrialized to produce lumbers, papers, and other human needs. We can’t deny the need to cut down trees, but to equalize the loss, planting trees is somehow satisfactory.
There are new novelties that had taken the initiative to lessen the consumption of papers. For instance, our very own college instructor, Sir Guerrero, has taken the scheme to have a paperless laboratory reports. This is a submission of all paper works via email. Being a responsible human being, we all need to take some initiatives to protect environment. We can consider following ways to save trees, to protect environment, and to live a healthy life:
- Plant as much trees as possible.
- Do not cut trees until there is an extreme need.
- Prefer paperless communication instead of using paper. Make use of Internet and mobile phones to promote paperless communication.
- Online examination system should be preferred instead of taking exams on paper.
- Minimize the use of paper towel. In place of paper towel, one can use cloth towel or hankie. (D. K. Gupta)
These are only few ways to help ourselves by saving our environment. Accordingly, we must work all together for our own benefit. Living in a healthy place will make us wealthy in greater things.
